May 29, 2008
Municipality of Barili, Cebu Province
by: Mr. Jesse Batara Statistician, Research Council

The CDU-CDUH Research Council had their Annual Educational Tour at the Municipality of Barili, Cebu Province last May 29, 2008.

The event was filled with fun and excitement. The first visit was at the Dairy Farm in Barili. Situated in a mountainous area, the farm showcased breeding places of animals such as horses, ostrich, pigs, sheeps, and chickens, while the highlight of such tour was the cite designated as milking stations for cows. Before the council left the place, some bought fresh milks sold in the farm.

The next stop was a courtesy call with the Mayor of Barili. The local government provided the group with tour guides. They guided the group in various local attractions. The council went to Mantayupan falls, and had their lunch there. This was a gathering which clearly facilitated interactions among the members.

After lunch, the group proceeded to Sayaw Beach, Barili. The group stayed there , and enjoyed the beach and the members’ company. Along the road the tour guide introduced the Polong Cliff wherein some decades ago, it was a death zone of brave locals during Japanese occupation.

As the group left the resort, they went to Hospicio de San Jose. This place housed several healthy old people. The council stopped by, and had a chat with the old folks. It was a solemn moment, while the group interacted with the folks telling stories about their pasts.

After the visit at Hospicio de San Jose, the group visited one of Car-Car’s tourists attraction, the leather shoes’ and sandals’ market. A number of the group bought some souvenir items. The products are cheaper than sold at malls in metro Cebu.

Indeed, it was a memorable educational tour. One could reflect on the interaction of people and environment. At the Dairy Farm, a researcher could develop research topic about the impact of animal breeding and waste management on the farm and local community. Moreover, this cite could be studied as model for tourism as well as environmental sustainable development. Upon going to Sayaw beach, the tour guide revealed to the group that the coastal area is the most important place they have been protecting, since; it is the main source of their livelihood. Fishing and farming are the local’s main pillars of income and livelihood. At the Hospicio de San Jose, it is interesting to note that the place cater only the healthy old folks. The individuals were assigned to the different wards. Their health is closely monitored by nurses, doctors, and other health care providers. One could probably pursue research on the social and health issue and its impact to the old people.

Therefore, the tour clearly provided the group with the opportunity to enjoy while learning in the process.
